Radiofrequency Microneedling – SecretPro Vs Morpheus8

Over the past eight years, I have offered the Dermapen Microneedling treatment at my clinic. This treatment has helped target and correct a range of skin concerns seen in our patients. I have always been passionate about incorporating innovative, powerful technology – backed by science and clinical case studies –  to provide long lasting, visible results. After many months of my own research and discussions with leading medical professionals in the field, I decided to invest in Cutera’s Secret Pro device;  a new machine which combines both microneedling and radio frequency as well as a powerful CO2 laser – bringing a three prong approach to skin rejuvenation.

However, it is not the only Microneedling machine available. Morpheus8 is seen as a close competitor in the field. Below, I will discuss the Secret Pro in further details and explain why, after a great deal of research, I believe it allows for a superior approach to skin rejuvenation than its competitors.

What are the benefits of microneedling?

Microneedling using a Dermapen is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation procedure which typically involves the use of oscillating micro-needles which are used  to create controlled micro-injuries on the skin’s surface as they are gently dragged over the skin. This stimulates the body’s natural wound-healing response which produces new collagen and elastin – essential proteins for youthful and healthy skin. A three-phase healing response is triggered in the body– inflammation, proliferation, and remodelling of skin. Damaged collagen and elastin structures are cleared, while the proliferation phase stimulates fibroblasts responsible for collagen and elastin production.

    What can microneedling help with?

Microneedling can help with the following skin concerns:

    ●  Fine lines

    ●  Wrinkles

    ●  Open pores

    ●  Lift/Tighten the skin

    ●  Acne scars

    ●  Surgical scars

    ●  Burn scars

    ●  Neck laxity

    ●  Hyperpigmentation

    ●  Photoaging & Stretch marks

Why did I invest in the SecretPro rather than the Morpheus8, and what makes it stand out?

When it came to choosing between the Secret Pro or the Morpheus 8 I took into consideration multiple factors, ranging from the technology it uses to treatment experience for patients and case studies showing results of treatment packages.

I quickly came to the conclusion that the Secret Pro by Cutera surpasses Morpheus 8 in many respects.

Firstly, the Secret Pro allows for a very bespoke and personalised treatment plan;  ensuring that each patient recieves a treatment which is tailored to their skin concerns and goals. Whilst results matter, I also believe in offering a comfortable skin rejuvenation process, as experience has taught me that uncomfortable treatments result in patients not being able to complete the full course of sessions needed to achieve desired outcomes. From my discussions with peers, Morpheus 8 takes a more aggressive approach to skin rejuviantion, which made completing the treatment difficult, with many not completing the course of treatment, thus leading to disappointing results.

Secondly, the Secret Pro also has a CO2 laser which is not offered with Morpeus8. This skin resurfacing laser can be done immediately after the RF microneedling treatment, thus treating multiple layers of the skin in one treatment;  effectively treating multiple layers of the skin, from the epidermis to the deeper dermal layers. Combining these two treatments (Radiofrequency Microneedling and CO2 laser) allows both the epidermis (superficial) and dermis (deep) layers to be fully treated, stimulating new collagen and hyaluronic acid levels at every level. As Co2 lasers target the chromophore water in the skin, it makes them them a very safe option for boosting skin remodelling and aesthetic appearance of skin.

Furthermore, the option of selecting different tips makes it ideal for treatments targeting qll areas of the body and face. The unique mechanism built into the handpeice allows for the needles to glide in and out of the skin in a smoother motion than Morpheus8, which leads to minimal damage to the skin’ surface, resulting in minimal downtime, with redness often subsiding within an hour of treatment. Cutera also has a unique set of tips for different skin types and colours to help minimise the risk of any post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (especially a concern for those with Fitzpatrick Skin Type 4- 6) making the treatment all inclusive.

    Treatment Options:

We highly recommend having a course of three sessions with us.

Please see below for full treatment options:

For the majority of my patients I recommend three sessions of RF microneedling and one session of CO2 laser. However, the CO2 laser resurfacing is optional and not always necessary. The treatment options will be discussed with you and a treatment plan will be devised accordingly. Many of our patients have achieved amazing results from three sessions of RF microneedling without the need of CO2 laser resurfacing.

Treatment sessions should be  carried out approximately 4 weeks apart.

Please note: The practitioner will assess your results after each treatment and make any necessary changes to the treatment settings in order to achieve optimal results.

Short term effects of the treatment:

Microneedling, like any cosmetic procedure has potential side effects, but these tend to subside quickly – typically within a few hours of treatment.

    1. Skin Redness – Following a microneedling session, it’s normal to see redness on the treated area, akin to mild sunburn.
    1. Swelling and Discomfort – Some individuals may experience slight swelling and discomfort around the treated area. This is usually temporary, subsiding within 72 hours post-treatment.
    1. Dryness and Flaking – In the days following the procedure, some patients notice some dryness and gentle flaking of the skin as the healing process starts and old skin cells are replaced by new ones. This is temporary and we include a post treatment cream (included in treatment cost) to help minimise this.
    1. Bruising and Bleeding – Depending on the depth of needle penetration, there could be minor bruising or pinpoint bleeding at the treatment site. This is rare and should resolve quickly by itself.
    1. Infection Risk – Though rare, there is a risk of developing an infection if the treated area isn’t properly cared for. It’s crucial to follow aftercare instructions to prevent this.
    1. Changes in Skin Colour – In some cases, there may be temporary or permanent changes in skin colour, particularly in those with darker skin tones. It’s important to discuss this potential risk with your practitioner if you’re prone to hyperpigmentation.
    1. Skin Reaction – In rare cases, individuals may experience allergy-like symptoms, such as itching, rash, or irritation due to the topical products used during the procedure.
    1. Reactivation of Cold Sores – For those with a history of herpes simplex virus, microneedling could potentially provoke an outbreak of cold sores. Pre-treatment with antiviral drugs can help prevent this.

    Is RF Microneedling for you?

If you are looking for a minimally invasive method to tighten and lift your skin, but you are apprehensive or want to delay using  injectables, I believe that the SecretPro Radiofrequency is perfect for you.
