Before and After Professional Hair Transplant Treatment At Skin Science Clinic London

  • FUE hair transplantation is the redistribution of healthy follicles from the side and back of head into the thinning/bald area. This is now the most popular method of hair transplantation, especially amongst those who like to keep the sides/back of their heads short. Hair grafts are extracted from the back of the head through a micropuncture, without the need of a large surgical cut/scar.

  • A new, thicker hairline with improved density across the entire scalp/desired area. Areas of male pattern baldness can be densley packed and restored through FUE hair transplantation. The precise nature of the hairline is discussed in detail with each patient through photogaphs and videography.

  • Hair loss is caused by androgenic hormones which have a detrimental effect on patients with genetic predisposition to hairloss.
  • There are a number of hairs which do not have receptors sensitive to androgen hormones, therefore remain on the scalp (most commonly the side and backs fo the head).
  • These follicles retain this feature for the entirety of ones lifetime.
  • Hair transplantation involves relocating theses follicles to where there is baldness.
  • Following transplantation, these hair continue to function and grow healthily.
  • FUE procedure does not require any surgical cut in the scalp, with minimal downtime compared to the tradiitonal FUT procedure.

What is the most common cause for hair loss?

Before discussing surgery, we ensure patients blood test results have been thoroughly analysed and any nutritional deficiencies optomised. We examine patient’s scalps carefully, ensuring the scalp tissue is free from disease. If there is any uncertainty, we can refer them to a member of out expert trichology team for the appropiate non surgical management.

Androgenetic Alopecia, otherwise known as male pattern balness is the most common cause of hair loss. It effects 50% of men over the age of 50.The conditions arises from a genetic predisposition towards alopecia that is derived from multiple gene loci. The exact gene coding association between hair loss and other family members affected by hair loss has not been determined, however we have noted that male pattern baldness can strongly run within generations of families. Given the progressive nature of hair loss, at Skin Science Clinic we ensure each patient has sufficient hair donor supply available to accommodate the needs of their potential hair loss over a ten year period.

Male pattern baldness does not simply result in the patient losing their hair. Instead, thick, long “terminal” hair gradually transform into wispy, short, “vellus” hairs, which in turn fall out and are lost. This process is called “Miniaturization”. Further, anagen cycles can shorten hair cycles from 4-6years to 1 year, with an increase in percentage of telogen hairs. The miniaturized, or vellus hairs, are the target of medical treatment with propecia and minoxidil, with the objective to to revert these hairs back to terminal hair. At our clinic, you will be given expert advice on the medical options available for male pattern baldness, however hair transplantation, when combined with these medical treatments provides outstanding results.

What is the difference between FUE and FUT hair transplantation?

Skin Science clinic specialises in FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair transplants, which is generally accepted to be the more popular form of hair transplant surgery. Traditional FUT surgery required a large surgical cut on the back of the patients head, resulting in prolonged post surgical recovery with the possiblity of a large surgical scar. FUE hair transplantation is now far more popular, through a special motorised punch, the team extract one individual hair graft at a time from the back of the the patients head. These hairs are then placed meticulously into the area of baldness/recession.This punch is miniscule in diameter, resulting in virtually no scarring/mico-scarring. As scarring is minimal, patients are able to retain and maintain short hair on the sides and back of their heads. FUE surgeries are generally less painful in the post operative period.

It is important however to note that FUE surgery is not suitable for all patients, and for some patients FUT surgery is more ideal. This is often the case when more than 1500 grafts are required. We can refer these patients onto colleagues who specialise in FUT procedures. We offer free, in-depth informative consultations for patients considering hair loss surgery. The cost of our FUE hair transplantation varies accoring to the number of hairs required.

We ensure all patients medication has been fully optomised, and fully support patients through their journey of hair restoration . All of our hair transplantations are performed in London, we provide outstanding results through a high level of artistry when operating and designing harlines.

    Who performs the hair surgery?

Each surgical procedure is led by Dr Sarwar, alongside two expert hair techncians. Hair transplantation is very much a team procedure, each member plays a crucial role in the procedure. Skin science clinic has employed hair technicians who have years of experience performing FUE procedures in London. We aim to provide natural hairlines implanted in the correct anatomical positions/direction with potent density. We understand that the post procedure period can be worrysome for patients. In light of this,we work closley with pioneering trichologists who provide our patients with superior post care hair washing, care and advice.

What sets Skin Science clinic apart from other clinics is the team levels of skill, artistry and strong ethical ethos. We provide hairlines which are suitable for each patients age, facial struture and ethnicity. All of our surgeries are perfomed in a fully CQC registred theatre.

How many hair grafts/hairs are extracted during an FUE surgery?

It is important for patients considering hair transplantation to consider the difference between hair grafts and indivdual hairs. We advise no more than 1500 grafts should be extracted during one surgical session. Each graft, can contain up to three or four individual hairs. We are careful not to overharvest the donor area as this can lead to hypopigmentation in the donor area (scarring). It is also important not to overharvest in patients under the age of 35, who may require further transplantations later in life.

Will there be scarring post procedure?

Our techncicians/surgeon use micropunctures of either 0.7mm/0.8mm, resulting in scarring which is hardly visible. Our meticulous techniques through years of experience allows us to provide wonderful results with minimal scarring. We do not incorporate the ARTAS system for FUE hair transplantation, instead favouring practitioners to perform this procedure. This scarring in the majority of causes is barley visible to the human eye. Most patients return to work after three days, and there are no stitches to be removed.

How long does the procedure take?

We aim to start surgery for 9:30am, with a finish at 5pm. This allows time for a number of breaks and adequate time for injections of local anasthesia. The anasthetic procedure is never rushed, and we have formulated accurate and effective dosign regimens of local anasthesia resulting in a comfortable surgical procedure for our patients. We strongly advise patients not to drive home, and an emergency number is given to all of our patients if there are any concerns.

How long does it take for results to show?

FUE hair transplant results are best visible 12 months post surgery when our patients are invtied back to clinic for an examination of their results. Some patients will choose to maintain results through PRP sessions, however this is optional and not compulsory.  We find that over 90% of hair grafts are maintained and results last for a number of years, often permanent.
