Androgenetic Alopecia, otherwise known as male pattern balness is the most common cause of hair loss. It effects 50% of men over the age of 50.The conditions arises from a genetic predisposition towards alopecia that is derived from multiple gene loci. The exact gene coding association between hair loss and other family members affected by hair loss has not been determined, however we have noted that male pattern baldness can strongly run within generations of families. Given the progressive nature of hair loss, at Skin Science Clinic we ensure each patient has sufficient hair donor supply available to accommodate the needs of their potential hair loss over a ten year period.
Male pattern baldness does not simply result in the patient losing their hair. Instead, thick, long “terminal” hair gradually transform into wispy, short, “vellus” hairs, which in turn fall out and are lost. This process is called “Miniaturization”. Further, anagen cycles can shorten hair cycles from 4-6years to 1 year, with an increase in percentage of telogen hairs. The miniaturized, or vellus hairs, are the target of medical treatment with propecia and minoxidil, with the objective to to revert these hairs back to terminal hair. At our clinic, you will be given expert advice on the medical options available for male pattern baldness, however hair transplantation, when combined with these medical treatments provides outstanding results.
