Lip fillers: The right and the wrong way
This post was written by Dr Adil Sarwar on October 14, 2018
Ageing happens to all of us and is unfortunately impossible to reverse. However, when it comes to our appearance, there are little things which we can do to help smooth this entirely natural process.
One of these treatments is lip fillers, which when perfectly crafted, can make a significant difference to one of the areas on the face which receives direct attention. In this article, we look at the benefits of lip fillers, before outlining the procedure itself, and then highlighting how the procedure should definitely not be performed.
What are the benefits of lip fillers?
There are plenty of potential aesthetic and personal benefits of a successful lip filler procedure, and it should be noted that the procedure itself typically takes a short time, and requires only a short recovery period. So what can lip fillers offer to you?
A more defined smile
A radiant smile is one of the most important things you can have in your life toolbox!. Lip fillers can allow your smile to realise its full potential, thanks to the careful addition of volume and crafting of an ideal shape. It’s time to make the most of this highly important asset!
A youthful look
Lip filler procedures are recognised in maintaining a youthful appearance, bringing a new spring and radiance to your lips, your mouth and entire face. It is amazing how some small subtle changes can make a big difference to your overall look, and being such an attention magnet, the lips are a good place to start.
Perk up the corners of your mouth
The corners of the mouth can naturally droop downwards over time, and while this can be a normal part of the ageing process, it doesn’t mean you can’t do something about it. Lip fillers can perk up the corners of the mouth so they point more upwards and droop less. It all goes towards a better smile and a more youthful appearance.
From thin to full
Lips can begin to thin as time goes on, and like it or not, we can naturally associate this development with the signs of ageing. That’s where lip fillers come in, offering a way of volumising the lips to a certain degree, without giving them the appearance of being bloated or the dreaded ‘trout pout’. That’s why it is so important to trust experts such as Skin Science Clinic, who are adept at making sure that lip fillers don’t turn into ‘lip fatteners’.
It is incredible just how good we can feel when we are looking our best. Better looking lips can transform our smile and help boost our self-esteem immeasurably. For many who undergo lip filler augmentation, this is the overarching benefit which represents a culmination of many of the other advantages – looking great and feeling more confident as a result.
The lip fillers procedure
With trusted specialists such as Skin Science Clinic, you will undergo a full consultation with an expert before your suitability for the lip fillers procedure is confirmed. You’ll know exactly what to expect, and will have been talked through all aspects of the procedure itself, as well as the recovery stage.
The lips are a sensitive area of the body, and so an injection of anaesthetic is an important precursor to the main part of the procedure. The lips are numbed using a local anaesthetic, meaning that there will be minimal feeling, and therefore minimal pain, during the rest of the procedure.
After anaesthetic has been applied, the doctor sometimes performs a skin test to check that you are not allergic to the filler used for the procedure. The lip fillers are then injected into the lips. The size will have already been determined during the consultation part of the process and is typically designed to achieve fuller looking lips while retaining a natural look.
The procedure usually takes only around 30 minutes from start to finish, and it is important to be aware of some common after effects, which can include; bruising, swelling and tenderness for between one and two weeks. After the recovery phase is over you can look forward to fuller, natural looking lips.
What not to do
Unfortunately, the examples of how the lip fillers procedure should not be performed are everywhere, perhaps most regularly highlighted by some high profile celebrities. In some cases, these individuals have chosen to go too far in the eyes of many, regularly adding to the lip fillers which they have already had, and blowing up their lips to an unnatural proportion.
A failure to conduct a proper examination prior to the procedure can be a potential issue. It is absolutely imperative that the size of the lip filler is decided in proportion to the cheeks and nose of the individual. At Skin Science Clinic, we place as much importance on this planning element as the procedure itself.
Proportionally, a rule of thumb for the volume of each lip can be 60 per cent for the bottom lip and 40 per cent for the top, but this can vary from individual to individual. In some examples of lip fillers done wrong, when the top lip becomes too big, this can give the appearance of ‘sausage lips’.
