DEFINITION

• FUE hair transplantation is the redistribution of healthy follicles from the side and back of head into the thinning/bald area. This is now the most popular method of hair transplantation, especially amongst those who like to keep the sides/back of their heads short. Hair grafts are extracted from the back of the head through a micropuncture, without the need of a large surgical cut/scar.

EFFECT

• A new, thicker hairline with improved density across the entire scalp/desired area. Areas of male pattern baldness can be densely packed and restored through FUE hair transplantation. The precise nature of the hairline is discussed in detail with each patient through photographs and videography.

SCIENCE

• Hair loss is caused by androgenic hormones which have a detrimental effect on patients with genetic predisposition to hair loss. There are a number of hairs which do not have receptors sensitive to androgen hormones, therefore remain on the scalp (most commonly the side and back of the head). These follicles retain this feature for the entirety of one’s lifetime. Hair transplantation involves relocating these follicles to where there is baldness. Following transplantation, these hair continue to function and grow healthily. FUE procedure does not require any surgical cut in the scalp, with minimal downtime compared to the traditional FUT procedure.

PROCEDURE

FUE is also less likely to leave a strong scar, so is preferred for patients who have a short sides/back haircut.
